Population of china grows by less than half a million in 2021; birth rate falls for 5th continuous year

China's population increased to 1.4126 billion by the end of last year, increasing by less than half a million as the birth rate declined for the fifth continuous year, stoking fears of an emerging demographic crisis and a consequent economic slowdown in the world's most populous nation.

At the end of 2021, China's mainland population increased to 1.4126 billion from 1.4120 billion in 2020, the (NBS) National Bureau of Statistics said. China's population increased by 4,80,000 in a year-on-year comparison from the year 2020, as per the NBS figures.

The number of new birth in 2021 at 10.62 million, down from 12 million in 2020, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post posted. Earlier this month, the country's third-most-populous administrative region, Henan province, said that its number of newborns fell to 9,20,000 in 2020 - a 23.3 percent decline from 2019 - as the birth rate dropped 9.24 births per 1,000 people.

Chinese states have started announcing a slew of supportive measures to motivate couples to have three children to prevent a sharp decline in birth rates.

China allowed all couples to have two child in 2016, scrapping the strict decades-old one-child policy, which policymakers criticize for the current demographic crisis.

Last year China passed a changed Population and Family Planning Law allowing Chinese couples to have three child in an apparent attempt to address the reluctance of teams to have more kids due to mounting costs.

The decision to permit the third child after the once-in-a-decade census in 2020 showed that China's population increased at its slowest pace to 1.412 billion.

The census data disclosed that China's demographic crisis was expected to increase as the population above 60 years rose to 264 million, up by 18.7 percent.
